I don't think Cagalli deserved Athrun one bit, she's rather immature and in no way matches up with Athrun. Although, in my opinion Athrun and Lacus were also good together, even though she's better with Kira because Athrun never really appreciated her one bit. Meyrin likes Athrun, but there is nothing in the series that indicates he has any interest in her. He lets her come along because, where else would she go? He's too nice to just leave her on her own. At no point do we get any tender scene between them, and while there is a bunch of footage with her looking at him, he is not looking at her. We do, however, get lots of moments in which Athrun is thinking about Cagalli. When he returns to concousness the first thing he sais is he wants to protect Cagalli. It isn't until later, when he's been awake for a while, that he even asks about Meyrin. Go back to the first couple episodes. During the entire series, Athrun never looks at another girl the way he looks at Cagalli in those episodes. As far as taking off the ring and Athrun letting her go, they had a lot going on at the moment! He knew she had to go back to Orb right then.
