Given the fact of the friendship with Shuurei's father, it is no wonder that Ryuuki has pounced onto the relationship with her.

No one who survives an abusive childhood, civil war, and the death and/or exile of his entire family could be stupid, but being very lonely is a sure bet.

Shuurei is honest, open, and unthinkingly kind, someone completely rare in the gilded world of palace intrigue. She is one of the few people that Ryuku can take at her word and not have to guard against. Is it any wonder he took to her as quickly has he did?

Shuurei is one of the few Ryuki can be Ryuki around.

:O Perhaps Shuurei will take an official vacation from the palace, and during that time Ryuuki shall pounce upon poor hapless Seiran.

Shuurei just seems to be the perfect heroine for this show; all her traits add up to make her a much more enjoyable and interesting character than most other anime leads. I think until partway through this episode she was more of a mother figure for Ryuuki, and the revelation at the end will be the stimulus that sets her more in the role of Empress.

While it obviously is not shounen-ai in any way no matter how much I would have loved it to be,

Don't worry, you'll get it in a different pairing. >D
